SHAPES & SHADOWS | NEW WORKS BY SOPHIA DRESS
THURSDAY JUNE 13TH, 2019
EXHIBITION THRU JULY 2019
Opening this June, Faces Gallery & Studio presents Shapes and Shadows a solo exhibition of new works from owner and artist in residence Sophia Dress. Working entirely with reclaimed materials to create mounted, wooden assemblages, Dress’ works are thematically rooted in abstraction and fortified by an eagerness to explore within that aesthetic. In this particular series of abstract works, Dress interprets the influence of both shape and light in defining our perceptions of and our interactions with physical space.
“Shapes and Shadows is a reflection on our inherent need to define space and those influences that create the spaces and moments in which we live.” In particular, Dress explores both the shapes that exist within and those that serve to delineate a physical space as well as the role of light to define an isolated moment within that particular space. Some of the works are more literal than others, but Dress prefers to keep her works ambiguous in the hopes of allowing each viewer to have their own isolated experience with her work.
At the core of all Sophia’s work exists an ambition to bring awareness to the spirit of her home and it’s histories, particularly those surrounding sustainability and the tradition of repurposing materials. A 13th generation Cape Cod native, Sophia sources her wood and other materials from area homes and gives them a renewed purpose before their histories are otherwise lost to a landfill. The majority of the wood used to create the pieces in Shapes and Shadows was sourced from homes built in the late 1800s in Chatham, MA.
The opening reception for Shapes and Shadows is Thursday June 13, 2019 from 5-8pm at Faces Gallery & Studio located at 668 and 670 Main St. in Dennisport, MA.
